3D Career Change

Well what a hectic but great year it´s been with my life, my son is nearly 2 now and I’m a happy married woman, but not so much for my career...that’s kind of came to a standstill since after finishing university, but been doing some freelance work here and there, and did a conference in the Campus Party (Ecuador), which I will be doing again this year! But what has come to my attention is that I may no longer do game related art work, my work is more heading me into high-end 3D work like Architectural 3D and commercial (ads esc) also I have been doing a lot of graphic design, like logos and business cards for companies.

The reason for this is that I moved from the UK to South America where games aren’t really popular and not really made here, so moving my career is a good thing to do, I may also go into teaching, which I have always wanted to do, but we will see how it moves along.

But there may be a chance I may just kick it all in and set up my own cupcake/cafe business, as baking has been one of my passions and keep the 3D as a hobby but who knows anything can happen in 5 years or so, but one thing I have realized it’s ok so drift from the path you started on because it may lead to a better, more enjoyable path.

So now I’m going to work on my portfolio, but less game stuff but more high-end 3D, hope you guys enjoy it!

Life and Art Updates - I'm on Track!!!

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 31, 2013, 6:16 PM

Life Seems Complete!

Hi and Welcome!

As some of you may have know, my life as been very hectic....I have a family now and have moved across the world, from England to south America. while doing all this I have finished university! tbh I still don't know how I did it all...

I Passed University!

So to start of I would like to say I have passed my university course....I passed with a 2:1 (with honers) so very happy about that, would have liked a 1st but with every thing that's happened in my life I'm happy!

My Dream job!

So something every graduate has a problem with is getting a job when they finish, but getting one of your dream jobs as well....Now I work freelance for an internet based company, called Sakura. I work as a 3D Computer Graphics Consultant, doing many different 3D projects, for example Architectural 3D. yes its not in games, but I'm having fun with this job, plus I'm kind of my own boss. but having a baby to look after this is great work for me, I still can be with my son and do what I love!

The Move!

Well I have settled in very nicely, I really like it here, I do miss England  but here every thing seems more chilled and the foods great to! My son loves being with his daddy and its so nice to be a family, plus getting married is in the future plans to Yay!

so my life seems to be sorted now...starting to feel old lol xD

Artwork!

You will be glad to know some artwork may be posted in the next coming months!

Life and Art Updates - On The Move!

Journal Entry: Tue May 14, 2013, 7:45 AM

Hi and welcome

I'm on the move!

Hi all my watchers, sorry I haven't been around a lot, I have been posted some new artworks, but I will get to that later. but some bad news, I won't be around much for a month or so and mainly in the next 2 weeks as I will be moving to South America (Ecuador) to be with my Partner. also I gave birth to my lovely little boy on the 12/12/12! so now I'm a mommy, while doing all this I have just finished my final year of university, so yes the last 7 months have been crazy and to be honest I need to have a vacation! so I'm moving there to bring my family together as my partner hasn't held his son yet as he was stuck working over there and I haven't seen him for a year, (Sept on Skype and that lol)

Finished final year of University

So yes with all that has gone on, I still was able to finish university and hopefully with high grades (I will keep you updated on that)

So here is all my work I did in university over the 3 years I have been there!

so yes its an exciting time for me and big changes happening in my life, but don't worry I will continue my 3D and game work, and later hopefully land a job in the industry, plus some of the year 3 projects will be updated to make them look even better and get them looking great for my portfolio!

hope to see and talk to you all soon!

Sorry for my Absence, big life events!

Sorry That I haven't been every active on dA, as I haven't been around in my group very much and haven't posted  much work, but life has been very hectic at the min with big life events at the min, some good, some bad and some just busy.

Well I'm in my 3rd year of  University Studying Games Modeling and Animation, that keeps me very busy, but also I'm 8 months pregnant with my first child, so going to be a new mom very soon and still trying to study in uni...yes I'm kind of crazy as my partner works over seas, so kind of doing this on my own for a while, till I can move with him!, but sadly my Granddad passed away this week so its been a bit hard as I was very close to him.

So unfortunately I don't think I will be very active for a long time, till I can settle down again, I will try and post some of my work I have been doing for uni, but at the min I'm not doing my own work...

So thanks for your understanding!

PE: Game Dev Interviews part 2

Sun May 27, 2012, 1:48 AM

hi and Welcome

Project Educate: Game Development Interviews part 2!

I have some amazing interviews of 3 great Artists today, today I have interviewed - beere , ChaoyuanXu and Dean Stolpmann -www.deanstolpmann.com/ , they are all from the game development industry and they all do different roles in that industry. They have all answered some questions, that should help and inspire you!

Interview with beere!

:iconbeere:beere
Name: Wiktor Öhman
Age: 24
Country I live in: Sweden
Occupation: 3D Artist

Q1 - Just tell us a bit about your self
I'm a 24 year-old guy living in Malmö, which is in the southern part of Sweden.
I live here with my girlfriend and my 3 year-old son.
When I'm not working with 3D I usually watch movies, play the guitar or play videogames.

Q2 - What software do you use or have used and for how long?
I use Maya, 3Ds Max and Modo, but my primary program is Maya which I've been using for about 5 years now.

Q3 - How long have you been doing Game Development?
I hadn't really thought about it, but it's been about 2.5 years now I believe. Time really flies when you're having fun!

Q4 - How did you come across Game Development and why did you chose do it professionally and/or study it?
Like so many others I started playing video games as a kid. I always wondered how they were made, and that curiousity stayed with me for years.
During my last year in high school I found a pamphlet from a school called School of Future Entertainment (SOFE) and I was really intrigued! I applied immediately and a few months later I got an acceptance letter!

Q5 - How did you learn to do Game Development art?
I learned about it at School of Future Entertainment. However, most of what I know I've learned during my time as a professional artist.

Q6 - Anything you struggle with in the Game creation progress?
Oh yeah, concepts! I've never been able to make a decent-looking concept.
This is something that I really want to be able to do, and if I ever go back to school, that is what I'll be studying!

Q7 - If you wasn't sitting at the computer making Art for Games, what could we find you doing?
Probably infront of my computer making music.

Q8 - Any Advise for new Game Artists just starting out?
The advice I give most people just starting out is, DON'T GIVE UP!
Learning something takes time, time and time! It'll require a lot from you, and you'll curse, sweat and cry!
But in the end it's worth it. It really is!

Finally - What's the funniest thing that's happened to you in Creating Games?
I don't know if this is considered funny, but the best feeling I've had being an artist was probably when I landed my first job! All that hard work, networking and frustration finally paid off! I was finally living my dream, making real games as a professional artist. It was truly awesome!

And here are some of his works!

Name: Chaoyuan Xu
Age:27
Country I live in:China
Occupation:Freelance

Q1 - Just tell us a bit about your self
Hello, everyone. You can just call me Yuan! I am a enthusiastic digital artist from China. Drawing art is what I love the most. And I love to play games (not just video games, but card games, board games as well!). Also, going to a movie and enjoying delicacies are my hobbies as well.

Q2 - What software do you use or have used and for how long?
I use photoshop most of times. Although I still prefer to draw on REAL papers. I began using photoshop in late 2005

Q3 - How long have you been doing Game Development?
I started working in game development in 2006. So this is my sixth year. I began in a game studio which was focusing on an MMO game. I learned a lot by working with them. They gave me the first insight of how to create a computer game and inspired me to keep walking on this path.

Q4 - How did you come across Game Development and why did you chose do it professionally and/or study it?
It's all about my love for games. Ever since I was a kid, the obsession for gaming drove me forward. I always dreamt of participating in creating a game, seeing the monsters or environments I designed coming to life in the screens. How wonderful the feeling is to see people love the games you created!

Q5 - How did you learn to do Game Development art?
I didn't go to any class or school to learn about game development art. It is having practice, and more practices. I appreciate arts. I learn from the masterpieces creating by the "forerunners" by studying and analyzing the way they drew, the angle they took, the action they shoot, and the light and shade they modified. But I still felt pity that I didn't go to an art school to have a proper and professional training, and it results me to have some issue under certain circumstances. I feel I still have a lot of rooms to improve. But well, I have already made a plan of improving, and am now working on it. I hope I can overcome these obstacles.

Q6 - Anything you struggle with in the Game creation progress?
For now, I still feel I have some difficulties on manifesting some great concepts and ideas. For example, during sketching phase it would look very great, but when I start detailing it, then it didn't turn out to be what I envisioned it should be. Especially on some certain characters. Then I would have to redo everything again to make it able to meet the standard I want it to. And I loathe it when this happens. I believe it was due to the lack of basic training in school. And I am trying to fix this problem now. So far, I can feel I am getting better and better.

Also, sometimes there might be some conflicts between the other developers and me. Usually it happens if we didn't have a proper communication. And I learned a lot from this lesson. I believe communication is the key.

Q7 - If you wasn't sitting at the computer making Art for Games, what could we find you doing?
If I am not an artist, then I would like to be a chef, or a manager of a restaurant. I love food and believing enjoy delicacies is one of the greatest delight of the life. I can't resist good food and sometimes I might have a crazy idea of becoming a chef that always wants to cook best food for his customers and himself. And if I am going to be a restaurant manager, maybe I will open a themed restaurant, cooperating with some game studios to feature some popular games for not only normal people, but game fans. So that people could enjoy good food while talking about the games they love.

Q8 - Any Advise for new Game Artists just starting out?
Make sure you have a solid basic training and always practice as much as you can. This is the utmost requirement. And you should have passion for everything in your life, not just games and arts. Sometimes you will notice that even a tiny bit of your life might happen in games as well.

Don't forget to have more interactions with other artists. Through them, you will not only just learn from them, but also be able to expand your networking within the world of arts. And they might bring you a lot more opportunities that you would

never imagine.

Finally - What's the funniest thing that's happened to you in Creating Games?
It was when I was still working in a game studio. During afternoon break, lots of my colleagues would sit together, enjoy some snacks or drinks, chatting about our life, or some bugs in game. Listening to other people's experience can always give you more knowledge of everything. And this turned out to be one of my most important inspirations. I remember one time when someone was complaining a bug that was very hard to fix, but then it turned out to be just a simple twitch that was pointing out by a man who was not working on that part. And everyone laughed.

For now, since I am a freelancer at the moment, I just simply enjoy my 2 chubby cats' accompany.

Interview with Dean Stolpmann!

Name: Dean Stolpmann
Age: 41
Country I live in: United Kingdom /New Zealand, New Zealand Born (Kiwi)
Occupation: Art Director

Q1 - Just tell us a bit about your self
Originally born in the wilds of New Zealand. Spent some early years in the Armed Services, found out that Comics and early thunderbird re runs were more fun than sitting in a muddy fox hole in the rain. I Quit the army and grew the hair long (note, I am bald now) I messed about with 3D software while working at a cabinetry makers factory. My plan was to work during the day and produce my comics at night, I was always interested in 2000ad comics and always wanted be an artist for Judge Dredd. I produced a few primitive comics and started to make headway. In the early ninety's I left New Zealand to wander the planet and managed to meet with the 2000ad creators about work. I was still tinkering with very early 3Ds max and Lightwave packages and gave up on the comic creation just after my first commission payment- (a comic artist gets paid very little.)

I returned to New Zealand 1998, at this time LOTR was ramping up, I wanted to apply to Wetafx, then for some bizarre reason I decided to work locally and with a shortage of 3D Artist's in my local area I was able to make a reasonable living doing to odd TV and Film FX with occasional concept art and design for local Sci Fi film makers. I started doing freelance game work via telephone and email for an overseas Game Dev company- I still had no interest in making games, Games still had the stigma the same way comics in the 50 – 60s had.
2001, I was approached to work for a UK based FilmFX company, at the time I followed someone's advice and took the job. I relocated and within 2 months that particular company had closed due to lack of projects.

I was stuck in the UK. And I was approached by David Braben of Elite fame to join his company Frontier, at the time I did not know who or what Elite was. I started work on Wallace and Grommit the Game with Nick Park. By 2003 Frontier took another direction that did suit me, the idea of Elite 4 was ever going to be made was never going to happen I realised.

I joined Climax Online in Nottingham a day after they closed their version or Warhammer Online, luckily they transferred me to racing Online. I had a fit of madness and actually asked to work back at frontier, thankfully they said no. The reason they said was due to I might steal their secrets, to me seemed a little illogical since I had already worked there and was asking to go back. In later years Frontier have asked me to return and many times since -I have replied saying I have too many secrets now.

I found myself working for Sony (Sony Cambridge uk) The most vile and incompetent circle of tyrants I have ever met of ever known since. Sony Cambridge produced the game 24 of jack Bauer fame. After that studio Spent 15 million pounds they produced probably the worst TV IP game in modern history. In an effort for the studio producers to pay themselves bonuses after losing so much money, they decided to fire 30% of the staff, thankfully I was one of them. (have never been that happy to be fired) later Sony Cambridge was reduced to an out source company due to being sued by ex staff on a huge scale.

I then ended up working for Electronic Arts Chertsey, to this day I have fond memories of working for that studio. I found myself as their senior concept artist/modeller on many occasions I was on loan to MPC and Framestore working on the Harry Potter Franchise. The bad press Electronic Arts has had over the last few years have been In my opinion a little unfair- I like it there and their treatment of me was good.

Criterion (the creators of Burnout) Was an interesting time for me. Alex Ward (director) due to his fits of madness created the most expensive video game in history, a little known fact the official budget at release was 45million USD- the figure was far higher. Alex Ward was (or is) a recovering cocaine addict (common knowledge) in his temper rages he would often spout the costs of his projects, today I hope Alex ward is succeeding with his treatment. I left working with criterion amongst my own very messy divorce (there is no place in games for a wife or partner) average working week was 70 – 100 hours and you had to work weekends (unpaid!)
Lucas Film/ the Mill

I was offered a short contract in the USA, I had a pleasant time working there but with the green card issues I couldn't really stay longer than my contract. Codemasters, I some how wound up working as their senior concept artist, to this day I am not sure why they hired me. I worked on concepts for racing games and I have no real idea of cars or any other kind of vehicle. Thank fully they took another direction and decided to create BLACK 2 – called Bodycount. Due to infighting and internal team politics, Bodycount was a disaster- it was to be my first and last First person shooter I was to be involved with, sadly the studio of talented people closed.

I was approached by Supermassive Games to be their art Director, this I my opinion would have to be the most professional and superb studio I have ever worked with. The directors had a very clever ethos that helped them to become a quiet world leader in the game development. They had no dev managers or producers and this helped their staff to surpass their own expectations- their policy was - "we hire people to do a job, let them to their job" this created and superb team atmosphere that has made supermassive games one of the most profitable companies in the industry.   About this time my father became ill and I decided to return to New Zealand,
I wound up working for a few small New Zealand games companies, their is very little in the way of game development in New Zealand, there is a Pioneer spirit that will maybe bring them to the fore front of game development.

Q2 - What software do you use or have used and for how long?
I use 3Dsmax, Maya (prefer maya) Zbrush, Mudbox, Photoshop and pencil and paper.

Q3 - How long have you been doing Game Development?
too long.

Q4 - How did you come across Game Development and why did you chose do it professionally and/or study it?
joined the wrong queue, (seriously I did!) -  I wanted to make comics

Q5 - How did you learn to do Game Development art?
had to teach myself - and lie alot.

Q6 - Anything you struggle with in the Game creation progress?
everyday is a struggle, people take the game business very seriously and behave badly. End of the day we do not solve world hunger or cure cancer, and games have no real value to society- but the egos or people would tell us another story

Q7 - If you wasn't sitting at the computer making Art for Games, what could we find you doing?
Zoo Keeper, this is would guarantee I would get sensible answers from  monkeys. Being a zoo keeper in many ways is like managing a team of artists and coders.

Q8 - Any Advise for new Game Artists just starting out?
try not to take it to seriously, and try not to be hurt by other peoples behavior- do not believe the illusion that games is fun to work in, it is not fun. Games industry is exploitative, low paid and desructive. The burnout rate is high and you will have no social life

Finally - What's the funniest thing that's happened to you in Creating Games?
Farting in an inteview with the director of Free Radical Design- and watching them go green while they were trying to be polite and deny that it had not happened, - I chuckle to this day.

And here are some of his works!

hi and Welcome

Project Educate: Game Development Interviews part 1!

Original Blog - projecteducate.deviantart.com/…

I have some amazing interviews of 3 great Artists today, today I have interviewed - HazardousArts, sangheili117 and Dudz, they are all from the game development industry and they all do different roles in that industry. They have all answered some questions, that should help and inspire you!

Interview with HazardousArts

:iconhazardousarts:HazardousArts
Name: Jon Troy Nickel
Age: 31
Country I live in: Australia
Occupation: Video Games Character Artist

Q1 - Just tell us a bit about your self
I'm a pretty self motivated artist, have always wanted to do my own things, on my own time, right back since I was very young. I didnt really get into seriously working in 3d art until around 2004 / 2005. I taught myself 3d, with help from friends, and the generous contributions by other artists to various onlines forums like cgtalk, polycount etc. A little before I started art I was actually a DJ, I toured around a bit and played electronic music in various clubs and raves - Music is still a big part of my every day life. I'm married to an awesome lady Anuxinamoon who is without a doubt my best friend and biggest inspiration :) Ive worked on about 30 games, most of them small and nothing that anyone would really know anything about, but most recently I was the Lead Character Artist on the MMO Rift, and in a few months time will be able to talk about where im going next and what ill be working on!

Q2 - What software do you use or have used and for how long?
Zbrush - 4 years, 3DSMax - 8 years, Maya - 2 years, Photoshop - 8 years, 3dcoat - 1 year, Topogun - 1 year, Xoliul Shader - 2 years, xnormal 3 - years, Unreal Engine 3 - 4 years, Gamebryo - 4 years.

Q3 - How long have you been doing Game Development?
Professionally since 2004, but I've dabbled in indy game dev since early 2003.

Q4 - How did you come across Game Development and why did you chose do it professionally and/or study it?
Ive been playing and programming games since I was very young around age 5 - 6. Mostly RPG's heh, and I still make time to play games, though, nowhere near as much as I used to! It was a natural progression that I gravitated towards i think, there were a few bumps along the way, I started pretty late, not until I was around 24 did I really get interested and serious about the games industry as a way of life.

Q5 - How did you learn to do Game Development art? All completely self taught via whatever I could find. I basically spent all my time trying to copy the good guys out there, I still do this today when im trying to learn something. I think thats super important. If you're a young artists trying to find your way, dont waste time doodling random things - study and copy, try to do what the masters do, and focus your learning, otherwise years can go by and you wont have learned anywhere near as much as you could have.

Q6 - Anything you struggle with in the Game creation progress?
Many things these days, keeping up with new tech, always finding new ways to communicate with people etc. I would love to learn japanese or korean languages so i could read, write and communicate better with some of my favourite artists!!

Q7 - If you wasn't sitting at the computer making Art for Games, what could we find you doing?
Either, in my garden growing food, or listening to music, playing games, watching anime - basically super nerd stuff :)

Q8 - Any Advise for new Game Artists just starting out?
Attack with all your might. Give this 150% and exhaust yourself every day by learning and constantly growing as an artist. Focus on your weaknesses and don't get comfortable, If you can do this - its only a matter of time before you become mighty.

Finally - What's the funniest thing that's happened to you in Creating Games?
Oh so many things, you have to realise when you work with a bunch of game developers, they are a crazy bunch of people - strange things can happen on a day to day basis. People coming to work in strange costumes - practical jokes by the dozen - the police showing up because people in surrounding buildings believed there was a hostage situation in progress outside our studio ( nothing but a simple live scene mockup by the animation team using weapon props etc )

Interview with sangheili117

:iconsangheili117:sangheili117
Name: Joe Pykett
Age: 23
Country I live in: UK
Occupation: Video Games Artist (generalist)

What software do you use or have used and for how long?
I manly use the following (in order of workflow):
Zbrush, 3D Coat, 3DSMax, xNormal and photoshop i also use after effects as well. i started my 3D experience in maya back in the days of collage which was about 6 years ago I believe, however while attending university i decided to learn 3DS max and am very glad that i did, its a program that I use heavily for work though as of late due to all the advancements that zbrush is getting i tend to spend more time using that than max or most of the other programs.

How long have you been doing Game Development?
I started taking work on back in university and since then my client numbers and contract numbers have grown greatly. I'd say I've been in games development around four years now and moving into five soon. its one of those types of jobs though that you don't really count the years, just have a fun time doing it, and in my job I find myself doing something different every day and this keeps me really motivated and challenged and makes me wonder what ill be doing next.

How did you come across Game Development and why did you chose do it professionally and/or study it?
I came across game development way back when i was just thirteen and the good old days of the nintendo 64. At that time my love for games was so much that i decided that i wanted to make art for games as my skill in art wasn't half bad either if i do say so myself, but i was a kid, and easily impressed. it was then the research began, how to get into the industry? what was the work structure? how do 3D programs work.

originally i only planned to go to collage and was gonna leave it there but after seeing that more and more studios required their possible job candidates to have a university degree it seemed the right thing to do to take the 3 year dive into university. and that led me to where i am today.

How did you learn to do Game Development art?
game development art is just like any other art at the concept stage there just pictures but the difficulty was texturing and 3D at first. It was just a case of learning what programs developers use and then learning to use those tools to a very high standard. speed isn't much of an issue as everyone seems to think though its just the rushes that really require buckling down and working extra hard.

As for learning university is a great place to do so, more because it gives you the time and challenge to practice all the time, and the lecturers teach you new techniques as they learn as well.

I guess what I'm trying to say is the learning never really ends because as long as there are programs and people to make them, they will always be updating to make the development process easier.

Anything you struggle with in the Game creation progress?
because of the nature of my job i cant say that i do truly struggle with anything really, not art wise anyway, it might make me sound big headed but if there's a job that needs doing I will at least give it a go and perhaps learn from it before even considering not doing it as this gives me the opportunity to learn something new and add it to my ever growing knowledge of art. There areas that I'm weaker at that aren't art related yes but nothing that is particularly troubling per-say

If you wasn't sitting at the computer making Art for Games, what could we find you doing?
oh there's many things i do out side of work, watching anime/cartoons, building gundam models, playing video games or even just chilling with some tunes maybe a combination of all four. Though when seasons/ games finish I'm never quite sure where to put myself at the time so i end up back on the computer making personal art

Any Advise for new Game Artists just starting out?
the world is a mess right now and there isn't many jobs going, you have to think that for every one job there could be anywhere up to 100 other people applying for the same job, so practice practice practice and make your art and knowledge better than everyone else's, get a blog or website, promote yourself on youtube and livestream, get your art all over the internet and sign up to job sites and professional networks like linked in to keep yourself in the loop, and most importantly don't give up. remember what Walt Disney said:

"all you dreams can come true, if you have the courage to pursue them"

and you know what, he's right and if you know somebody in the industry personally, there your best bet to get in easily, but don't pester them.

Interview with Dudz

:icondudz: Dudz
Name: Will Dudley
Age: 22
Country I live in: UK
Occupation: Facial Animator at Lionhead.

Q1 - Just tell us a bit about your self
I guess you could almost call me a 3D Generalist (If only i could do character animation). I graduated in 2010 with a degree in Computer Animation from the university of Portsmouth. I then got my first job as a 3D artist at Rare working on Kinect Sports: Season Two. Now i find myself working at Lionhead doing Facial Animation for Fable: Journey.
When i'm not sitting at work, bewildered at how I manage to get such awesome jobs, i spend my time drawing, playing any video game i can get my hands on and spending too much money on Lego.

Q2 - What software do you use or have used and for how long?
I used 3DS Max for three years at University. Then Maya for 9 months when I was a Rare. I've dabbled in zBrush, and used Motion Builder briefly. I've been using Photoshop forever.
As primarily a modeler i think I'll always have a soft spot for Max, it's where i have the deepest knowledge. When you learn to use a software package as part of a job you tend to only learn what you need, so with Maya and Motion Builder I only know a detailed but small area of the software.

Q3 - How long have you been doing Game Development?
I started working for Rare in March 2010. I spent 9 months there and the contract ended when the game was finished. I then lucked into a job here at Lionhead through a friend from university and I've been here for nearly 3 months. Everyone always says it's who you know, and i guess that was kind of the case here. But you still have to be able to the job, or you won't find yourself there very long, and your friend will look like a fool to his boss.

Q4 - How did you come across Game Development and why did you chose do it professionally and/or study it?
Since i was about 15 I've been playing with textures in Counter Strike and Call of Duty (Yeah, that COD 1 ya whipper-snappers!) I wouldn't want to count the amount of hours I spent "playing" with these games. I eventually got fairly proficient with the level editors for each (Hammer and Radiant). If you want to get games then playing with level creation tools is a great way to start. It's a great way to get a basic understanding of the whole process, and from there you can start to decide whether you want to start creating your own art for the levels, or start scripting new features.

When I was looking at what to do at university i was really stuck. I was looking at courses for things i had done alright in at college. Then a friend pointed out some courses in 3D art and game development. I'd never really thought about it as a career, it was surely too fun to get anyone to pay you to do it.

Q5 - How did you learn to do Game Development art?
University was a great place to learn the skills needed, outside of lectures the key was time. Spending as long as you can with your head shoved deep into whatever program you're using. If you love game developement then you'll never stop having ideas for things to create, and through making these ideas into reality (well... virtual reality) you'll learn more and more.
When I started my first job i was shocked at how little I knew. Every company does things a little differently, and it's all completely different to how things are done at university. You can learn so much in industry just by talking to the people around you, especially if you buy the right people the right drinks.

Q6 - Anything you struggle with in the Game creation progress?
I really should say 'No' in case any future employers might be reading.
I often find myself getting distracted when deep into a personal project. I don't have a particularly short attention span but game art can take a long time, especially if you like to push yourself. So once i've got into a project and it's started to become a bit repetitive i always start thinking of new ideas and it's always more fun to start something new than to keep churning through polygons.

I never tend to have this problem with work in industry. Perhaps because so far i have always worked on lots of smaller things, level props and cutscenes, rather than grand sprawling levels. There's also the effect of sitting in a room with 50-200 people who all love game development too. There is always someone doing something new and interesting, or someone who finds what you're doing new and interesting.

Q7 - If you wasn't sitting at the computer making Art for Games, what could we find you doing?
I find myself wanting to play every video game that comes out. Any game that has anything new to contribute to game development has to be played. It's gotten so out of hand that there is a spreadsheet involved.

I can't remember who i first heard this from but to be a game developer any piece of knowledge is useful, because anything can become a video game. So i find myself forever trying to keep on top of the latest movies, books and games, while still trying to track down the classics and watch/read/play them. Anything that might spark off an idea.

Q8 - Any Advise for new Game Artists just starting out?
Be malleable. As a starter it can be very tempting to get stuck in a certain art style, and this can make it hard to get a job. A lot of games these days have started moving away from striving for realism, it's just too expensive. So if you show that you can tackle any art style and work within limitations then you are extremely hireable.

Finally - What's the funniest thing that's happened to you in Creating Games?
It would probably have to be when an art lead decided to teach me to skateboard during a cocktail party inside the Rare offices. I ended up flying straight up in the air, the skateboard flying off at at least 200 miles an hour towards someones computer. Luckily the computer was fine, I bust up my knee but still managed to kick everones arses and Dance Central.
Either that or doing the Snoopy dance when I got my first job, at the company which made Banjoe Kazooie, my favourite game from my childhood.

PE: Game Development Information Day!

Tue May 22, 2012, 11:14 AM

hi and Welcome

Project Educate: Game Development Information Day!

Original blog - projecteducate.deviantart.com/…

For this day I'm going to be gathering information about game art, like what is Game development art all about, A recap on what goes in the game development art category, some articles on game development and some tips and hints on how to make it big in the game development side of dA and how to get your work noticed. for this I list all the info in this blog.

What is Game Development Art all about!

Game development art can be for both video games and board/card games, but now days video games are the more popular, so that's what I'm going to be covering most of all but this can be transferred to board/card games. but the biggest mistake people on deviantArt think that Game Development Art Category is for Fan art of actual games, e.g. sonic, Mario, legend of Zelda, assassins creed and the list goes on, but this gallery is for original artworks, made for new and original games for example games that are not out yet and that are in the progress of being made, or artworks that made to a stranded that would be for a game or just for practice or portfolios for games, but I will go on about whats meant to go in Game Development category later in the blog.  but in his section I will be discussing what is Game Development Art! as probably a lot of you have general idea what its about or know very little.

(token from Wikipedia and edited by me)
Video game development is the generally involved and lengthy process of creating a video game. Development is undertaken by a game developer, which may range from a single person to a large business. Mainstream games are normally funded by a publisher and take several years to develop. Indie games can take less time and can be produced cheaply by individuals and small developers. The indie game industry has seen a rise in recent years with the growth of new online distribution systems and the mobile game market.

The first video games were developed in 1960s, but required mainframe computers and were not available to general public. Commercial game development began in 1970s with the advent of first generation video game consoles and home computers. Due to low costs and low capabilities of computers, a lone programmer could develop a full game. However, approaching the 21st century, ever-increasing computer processing power and heightened consumer expectations made it impossible for a single developer to produce a mainstream game. The average price of game production slowly rose from US$1M–4M in 2000 to over 5M in 2006 to over 20M in 2010. so now the video games industry is getting as big as the film industry, so its possible to get a job in the games industry with the right training and experience as the industry is getting bigger and it takes more people to produce games now days, so there is more jobs up for grabs then it was 10 years ago, but its a highly competitive industry to get into, but its like this for most artistic industrys.

Mainstream games are generally developed in phases. First, in pre-production, pitches, prototypes, and game design documents are written. If the idea is approved and the developer receives funding, a full-scale development begins. This usually involves a 20–100 man team of various responsibilities, such as designers, artists, programmers, testers, etc. The games go through development, alpha, and beta stages until finally being released. Modern games are advertised, marketed, and showcased at trade show demos. Even so, many games do not turn a profit, and in some cases some games don't even get finished. but when they do its very rewarding.

as on deviantArt we focus more on the art side of game development rather than the programming side and who the game works, we focus more on the look of the game. and making things look pretty! so here is a bit of description on the what each type of artist dose in games.

The art production of a video game is overseen by an art director or art lead, making sure their vision is followed. The art director manages the art team, scheduling and coordination within the development team. The art director must also make sure art produced by different team members is consistent within the game. A team may also have a lead artist fulfilling day-to-day management of the team. An artist may be responsible for more than one role. The artist's job may be 2D oriented or/and 3D oriented and there are several disciplines involved.

2D artists
- A concept artist works with the game designers, producing character and environment sketches and story-board and influencing the "look of the game". A concept artist's job is to follow the art director's vision. The produced art may be in traditional media, such as drawings or clay molds, or 2D software, such as Adobe Photoshop. Concept art produced in the beginning of the production serves as a guide for the rest of development. Concept art is used for demonstration to the art director, producers and stakeholders.
- A storyboarder is a concept artist who designs and articulates scene sequences for review before main art production.
- A sprite artist creates non-static characters and objects or sprites for 2D games. Each sprite may consist of several frames used for animation.
- A texture artist creates textures or skins and applies them to 3D model meshes, a 3D Artist will also be able to create their own textures for the models they make.
- A map artist or background modeller creates static art assets for game levels and maps, such as environmental backdrops or terrain images for 2D games.
- An interface artist works with the interface programmer and designer to produce game interface, such as game menus, HUDs, etc.

3D artists
- A modeller or 3D modeller creates meshes for characters and objects, using 3D computer graphics software, such as 3ds Max or Maya.
- A Character Modeller is a 3D artist adept at creating life-like or cartoon/stylized character models.
- An animator works with 3D models to produce realistic animations. Often motion capture is utilized to create smooth animation.
- An environmental artist or level artist creates 3D assets for game environment, such as terrain shape, landscape features, objects, etc. While an environmental artist's job is similar to a level designer's work, the artist is only responsible for visual appearance and not gameplay.
- A cinematic artist or cut-scene animator produces cinematics and cutscenes for the game. Companies may also hire outside studios to produce cinematics. Larger companies have their own dedicated 3D artist teams.
- A lighting director, often the art director or level artist, is responsible for illuminating the game world.

Making Art for games is a fun and joyous art discipline to do, as there is meany art disciplines that are need to create one game. and you can always be learning and expanding with the industry as the industry getting bigger and more advanced, you can never really get board as you will be doing something different each time. even if you play loads of games or very though the game industry is a great place to be. but even doing game art work for a hobby is also as fun.

What goes in the Game Development Art category and what dose not!

There is a big confusion on what goes in the Game Development Art category here on deviantArt. more than 50% of the category is full of deviations that are not meant to be in Game Development Art category. and I would say about 20% of Game Development Art  is submitted into other categories, like 3-dimensional and digital art, yes they fit in the other categories, but if there game related they should go into the Game Development Art category. but the biggest mistake people on deviantArt think that Game Development Art Category is for Fan art of actual games, e.g. sonic, Mario, legend of Zelda, assassins creed and the list goes on, but this gallery is for original artworks, made for new and original games for example games that are not out yet and that are in the progress of being made, or artworks that made to a stranded that would be for a game or just for practice or portfolios for games

Beware of Copy Right

(written by Cymae and edited by me)
Ripping models out of games and using them in your art is absolutely 100% not allowed on DA. This is considered a copyright infringement. Passing these around to others just makes things even worse. Please make sure you don't do this and don't use resources that have been taken from games. plus these models should not be submitted into the Game Development Art category, as the models are from existing games, and would be more suited in fan art, only if models have credit due to the games companies that made them.

Screenshots of existing games are a bit more of a grey area. Some game companies let you post them some don't. If you MUST post screenshots, please make sure they are correctly labeled and credited, and put in the Fan Art gallery.

Giving Credit where Credit is Due! If you are using any resources which require you to give credit for use, please do so. Additionally, if you have created an image and only part of it is your original work, make sure you clearly explain this.

Confusion on Game Art and Fan art

(written by Cymae and edited by me)
Fan Art is any art you make yourself from scratch based on an existing concept or franchise, and as such belongs in the Fan Art category. This does NOT include ripped game models, screenshots of games you've manipulated or anything like that. You must be using 100% your own work or resources which the copyright holder has expressly given permission to be used.

as I explained above a lot of people think that game development art is for fan art of already existing games, like sonic, Mario, legend of Zelda esc... or screenshots of existing games and even models ripped out of games and game mods, these all don't belong the the Game Development Art category, all these should be submitted into the Fan Art Category of deviantArt. I would suggest submitting in the right category as wrong category deviations or deviations that have gone behind copyright can not be submitted or suggested for a daily deviation.

"why not simply move the wrongly submitted deviations" there are so meany submissions that are submitted in the wrong place, it would take days and plus people keep submitting in the wrong place, so we would be doing this for a very long time, if people would simply submit in the right place we wouldn't have the problem, its not the just dA admin that get annoyed with miss-categorized deviations, its other members on dA as well, people use categorys to search for types of art, if the categorys are half full of miss-categorized deviations, people have to shift through all that before they find what they are looking for, this makes it hard for deviants to find artwork to showcase and feature. so please for your own benefit make sure you submit into the right categorys!

Some Examples on whats right and whats wrongly submitted in Game Development Art Category

What should be submitted to Game Development Art Category
Goddess of System by stalsky Game Scene Paradise Island by firebolide Somewhat Impractical Sword 3D by ZackF

What should Not be submitted to Game Development Art Category
Assassin's Creed Redesign - Beauty Shot by davislim Solid Snake and Sonic by YIshida aZu_Ki, a cute dwarf by HimeLya
(these belong in Fan Art Category!)

Some Tips and Hints on how to make it big in the Game Development side of dA and how to get your work noticed!

so here is some tips and hints on how to make it big in the Game Development side of dA. I think the biggest thing to remember is that you don't get noticed by sitting back and doing nothing. would all like to think that our work gets us noticed, in some cases it what gates us noticed, but some of it is how active you are and what you do!

Be on online more!
If possible be online more, this actually helps gets you noticed, people like to look at work of people who are online regularly and feature artwork work of people that are online a lot as they don't like help people who they full own notice it cause there not online.

Be more active!
This is the most impotent tip, the more active you are the more people will notice you and your artwork, if you don't post a lot of artwork keep active by commenting on others work and posting blogs and journals, suggesting daily deviations is a good way of getting noticed, you can suggest your own work or someone others work, plus you will be helping other people get noticed to. we would all like that our work gets us noticed as artists, but sadly only 40% people get noticed by there work alone. some times its sad when a really good artist is not as noticed cause they don't push there artwork out there! I would also suggest entering contest, this also gets you noticed and some come with some awesome prizes, and plus people like to watch contests to see who wins!

Be helpful!
get noticed by being helpful is they best way, it makes you out the be kind and helpful person, and people help people who are also helpful, basically "if you scratch my back I will scratch yours" so doing and making tutorials is a good way, also doing helpful blogs, featuring other peoples work. and suggesting daily deviations. helping out in groups and clubs and just sharing your experiences and expertise!

Join as meany groups and clubs as possible and bring your work out!
joining groups and clubs on dA and posting your work on there is a great way of getting your work noticed, and it pushes your work out there. a lot of groups have a featured section and they also like to show case work thats submitted into the group. both of these get a lot of attention from both members and people just passing by the group page.

Sorry to Announce...

Hi and Welcome

Sorry to Announce... There weren't enough entries to finish the Game Dev Contest

Yeah it was a bit sad and disappointing to find only 2 people entered the contest, even after i extended it for a month - willowxd.deviantart.com/journa… I was hoping more people would have entered, I needed at least 5 entries to continue the contest. I know this is partly my fault, as I did run the contest on a busy time of the year, and that meant less could people enter due to people being busy and I didn't get the time to advertise it as much as I could.

Thanks to those people who did enter, I just hope that you liked the contest, even though I couldn't gave you any prizes for your effort :(

Next time if I run a contest I will make sure it's on a time where people can enter and I will gave you much notice and try and get people to enter, but I don't think the next contest will be till May now for Gave Dev Project Educate.

Sorry to deliver this bad news

Thanks for your understanding
