Name: Joanna Smith
Nationality: White British
Weight: 62 kg
Occupation: UK Military officer (Major)
Relationship status: Single (has no desire to find anyone at this point of her life)
Mum: is a house wife; Joanna has a close relationship with her mum, but due to her busy life style, she is not able to spend time helping her mum with day to day things, as her mum is in her late 60s.
Dad: Joanna’s dad died in the beginning of World War 2. She never really had a close relationship with her father as her dad was never really around. Her dad never agreed with Joanna’s desire of joining the army because he felt that she should stay at home and have her own family. However, Joanna never liked her dad’s old ways about woman and was always trying to make him modernise.
Sister: Joanna has a younger sister, aged 22. Her sister looks up to Joanna, but she is kind of jealous of Joanna’s current success, which tends to drive a wedge between them a bit. Her sister also works in the Military as a secretary.
Joanna grew up in northern Devon, in a small village with her mum, dad and sister. She was a quiet child; she kept herself to herself, never really made a fuss. She never really was a girly girl; she did like to play with the boys and didn’t mind getting dirty, and most of her friends were male. She never really got bulled as a kid, except for the name calling as she was a bit of book worm, but she was never a push over because, she knew how to stand up for herself. Joanna was an intelligent child, she got good grades in school, and her favourite subjects were maths, science and history. She loved history, and one of her goals in life is to travel the world and visit historical sites.
Joanna started in the Military at the age of 19. She joined for two reasons; one is to get the chance to travel the world, and the other is to get away from home because her dad was always pushing his beliefs on to her. It hurt her to leave her mum and sister, but with her dad always on her back and trying to push her into marriage and to have kids. Joanna never really wanted to end up like her mum, to be a house wife, stuck in a house for the rest of her life. Joanna felt it was best to leave and get on with her life. But after 2 years of not talking or seeing her dad, he dies in a bomb raid in London. This crushed her because all she wanted is her dad to be proud of her for once.
There was one moment in the army that changed her life; she was only a corporal at the time. Her team was sent to the front lines, to help in fight agenised the Germans, but there was a surprise attack from the air. Joanna saw one of her team mates injured, and went to aid him, but then another attack was on its way; she managed to shove her mate into the trench, but she was not able to get out of the way in time, and her leg got seriously injured. Even with her serous injures, she continued to aid some of the injured soldiers. In the end, her leg had to be amputated and she was given a prostatic leg which was made out of old tank parts. For her bravery, she was able to climb up the ranks. This was really rare for a woman to be able to do because, during those times, women were not allowed to fight in the war, never mind to be a commanding officer.
Joanna has a unique personality; she comes across very serious and cold. But once you get to know her, she is, in fact, a very warm and caring person. She would aid anyone who needs it. The reason of being so serious and cold is because she is used to be looked down upon for being a woman; also, as she has seen many of her friends and team mates die around her, she seems distant must of the time, but she is very down to earth. Joanna is firm, but fair with her decisions as well as her discipline. She doesn’t like to be walked over; she considers herself as disciplined and hard working, but she can procrastinate from time to time with her paper work.
