Awesome tutorial :D

This is pretty much what I had to pay to learn from a games art diploma but yours is way better presented and written.

Adv. 3D Text. Tut. - o.k. so you suggest just a simple height map in xNormal because it's greyscale, right? Basically, you can use Photoshop to exaggerate, or 'wash over' any details that you'd like to change? Just tryng to make sure I understand :p.

well that's what i suggest, I tend to go for the hight map, but you can do a normal map from xnormal, or do both and see that looks better.

I had someone else recommend Xnormal last night. I have it, just been having troubles with 3DS Max crashing soon after I UVW map a model. It's a real pain.

I can crash anything with a computer chip, even a calculator it seems. Talent or curse... I'm not sure...

I found really interesting how you made the normal map from the height map instead of transferring it directly. I tried it and I think it works even better than doing the transfer.

Well I'm glad you find my way of normal mapping helpful and interesting, I feel doing it this way you get more control and it can make it easer to edit the normal map

nice but you are using 6 "uv faces" for a cube, you should overlap them.

yes, but overlapping tents to course problems when normal mapping and doing occlusion maps, so for the tutorial I'm not, I tend to over lap simple objects like this, when I'm doing my own work, but not overlapping makes the tutorial simpler for the person viewing it.

I've always wondered what the deal was with "normal" mapping; my studies haven't taken me that far yet. Thanks for creating this tut.
